INFORMATION ABOUT THIS ARTIST:  Pierre-Jules Mène (1810–1879) was a French sculptor renowned for his exceptional talent in creating animal sculptures, particularly those featuring horses. Born in Paris, Mène came from a family with a background in metalworking, and he initially worked in his father’s metal foundry. His exposure to the artistry of the foundry likely influenced his later career as a sculptor.

Mène specialized in the “animalier” genre, which focused on the realistic depiction of animals. His sculptures, especially those of horses, were highly regarded for their accuracy in capturing the anatomy, movement, and spirit of the animals. Mène’s attention to detail and his ability to convey the energy and life of his subjects set him apart in the 19th-century art world.

One of his most famous works is “Cheval Turc” (Turkish Horse), which exemplifies his mastery in portraying the strength and elegance of horses. Mène’s sculptures were often cast in bronze, and his works gained popularity not only in France but also internationally. His art was sought after by collectors and admirers, contributing to the popularity of the animalier style during the 19th century.

Pierre-Jules Mène’s legacy endures, and his sculptures can be found in museums and private collections worldwide. His work continues to be celebrated for its skillful representation of the natural beauty and grace of animals, particularly horses.
