More about the Artist:  Armando Amaya, Mexican (1935 – )

Sculptor Armando Amaya was born in Mexico City in 1935. He embarked on his artistic journey at the National School of Painting and Sculpture under the tutelage of renowned instructors Jose Ruiz and Francisco Zuñiga. Amaya’s dedication and talent led to his appointment as a Professor at the same institution in 1969. His artistic roots trace back to the Esmeralda School, where he honed his craft among a community of artisans involved in government projects.

Amaya’s oeuvre stands as a testament to his mastery in interpreting the female form, a theme deeply entrenched in the rich tapestry of Latin American art. His creations embody a fusion of European influences and indigenous aesthetics, characteristic of the evocative art prevalent in the region.

Beyond formal education, Amaya drew inspiration from his surroundings. His upbringing in a small town outside Mexico City instilled in him a profound connection to nature, fostering an appreciation for organic shapes and the process of growth and evolution.

Whether working with terracotta clay, bronze, or marble, Amaya’s approach remains consistent—he sculpts directly from the model. His portrayal of the female body exudes dignity, grace, and individuality, seamlessly blending elements of the Mexican Figurative movement with modernist experimentation.

Amaya’s sculptures adorn private and public collections across the globe, including the United States, Canada, Japan, Ecuador, Mexico, and various other Latin American countries. His enduring legacy continues to captivate audiences worldwide, serving as a testament to his remarkable talent and artistic vision.
