History and Significance:  Barbara Beretich’s bronze wall relief commemorates the renowned scientist Jonas Salk (1914-1995), who developed the first successful vaccine against polio. Created in 1976, this work stands as a testament to Beretich’s artistic skill and her ability to capture the essence of significant historical figures.

Each relief, approximately 15 inches in diameter, bears Beretich’s signature, date, and title, adding to its authenticity and provenance. Crafted in bronze, the reliefs exhibit a rich patina, with variations in color ranging from patinated bronze to a verdigris wash.

Jonas Salk’s groundbreaking work began in 1948 when he embarked on a mission to develop a vaccine against poliovirus while serving as a professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Over the course of seven years, Salk’s dedication and scientific prowess led to the development of the polio vaccine, a monumental achievement in the field of medicine.

Beretich’s portrayal of Salk in these reliefs pays homage to his contributions to public health and his pivotal role in eradicating polio. As a sculptor, Beretich captures Salk’s likeness with reverence and precision, creating a lasting tribute to a scientist whose work saved countless lives and changed the course of medical history.

This pair of reliefs, housed in a Los Angeles, CA estate, serves as a reminder of the enduring legacy of Jonas Salk and the artistic talent of Barbara Beretich.

Biography of the Atist: Regarded as the grande dame of Claremont’s rich art and culture community, Beretich not only contributed to fostering art appreciation but also played a significant role in the regional art movement known as the “Claremont School.” A renowned sculptor and influential gallery director, her impact on the art world was profound.

Born on March 25, 1936, in Chicago, Beretich’s childhood was marked by frequent moves between Chicago, San Diego, and Ohio. She pursued art at the University of Illinois, graduating in 1958. A transformative trip to Europe in 1960 introduced her to influential artists, including Francoise Gilot, with whom she developed a lifelong friendship.

Beretich pursued her MFA in sculpture at Claremont Graduate School (now Claremont Graduate University) from 1962 to 1965. During this time, she crossed paths with Millard Sheets, who became her mentor. In 1966, a grant facilitated a year in Paris, where she studied sculpture and created lithographs at the renowned Mourlot Studios.

Her artistic journey included commissions for portraits and architectural studies, collaborating with the Millard Sheets Studio on various architectural projects. From 1973 to 1978, she directed Gallery 8, showcasing Claremont artists and international talents. Beretich then founded Galeria Beretich, known for its innovative approach and vibrant events that attracted art enthusiasts, Claremont College students, and even Hollywood elite.

In the mid-1980s, she embarked on a transformative journey to India and Europe, studying sculpture in Italy. This period marked a prolific phase in her career, where she curated the Edward G. Robinson Collection, served as an independent appraiser and curator, and actively contributed to the art world.

Beretich’s passion extended beyond self-promotion; she focused on groundbreaking exhibitions that drew collectors globally. A student of Millard Sheets, she embodied his belief that art is a core aspect of life. Beretich’s gifts and talents continued to shine in recent years, with solo shows and curated exhibitions.

A celebration of her life will be held at a future date, honoring the legacy of a remarkable woman who left an indelible mark on Claremont’s artistic landscape.
